Patient Education

  • " The process of influencing patient behavior, producing changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skill required to maintain and improve health.” The process may begin with the imparting of information, but also includes interpretation and integration of the information in such a manner as to bring about attitudinal or behavioral changes.
  • " The process of influencing patient behavior, producing changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skill required to maintain and improve health.” 
  • It considers the patient-holistically, with all his needs and concerns, and sets goals with the patient for desired outcomes.
  • Patient Education is any set of planned, educational activities designed to improve patients’ health behaviours and/or health status.

Definition of patient teaching-

  • Patient teaching refers to only one component of the patient education process the actual imparting of information to the patient.
  • The transfer of knowledge that takes place with patient teaching does not ensure behavioral change. 

Purposes of Patient Education

The purpose of the patient education is to empower the patient with competence and confidence for self. management. The aim-

  • To move the patient from fully dependent to be self- dependent, so that patient is ready for self-care and resumes back the routine of his/her life.
  • Improve quality of care.
  • Ensure continuity of care.
  • Reduce anxiety and clear doubts of patient.
  • Ensure expected results of treatment with patient education and participation.
  • Promote the compliance to treatment therapy or intervention.
  • Help the patient in decision making.

Patient Education can be divided as-

  1. Clinical patient education 
  2. Health education  
    Clinical patient education Health education education
    Teaching provided to the patient during the course of treatment in clinical setting. Focuses on the wellness, prevention and health promotion.
    For example, education is to help the patient in decision making related to his/her recovery, treatment, intervention choices. For example, health teaching about prevention of complications after going home.

     

Purposes of Patient Education
