Professional Etiquette's of Nurses-

  • A Nurse should be Gentle, Polite and Courteous to all.
  • The Nurse should greet or her seniors, patients with appropriate words and according to his the time of the day. Eg. Good Morning, Good Evening, Good Night
  • Your should address the seniors with proper title. Eg: Sir, Madam, Sister, Miss etc.
  • A Nurse should stand up when people of higher work rank  enters her room.

  • Stand up when answering questions in the class room.

  • Excuse yourself when overtaking a senior person.

  • A Nurse should keep your dress neat and tidy.

  • A Nurse should be punctual always.

  • While on duty never use any jewellery.

  • Obey seniors without arguing.

  • Do not delay your answers to the questions.

  • A Nurse should give answers immediately and appropriately.

  • Keep eye contact and sit face to face when listening to someone.

  • A Nurse should never let others secret go out of you.

  • Maintain silence whenever necessary

Role and function  of Nurses-

1. Caregiver -

The caregiver role is traditionally and most essential role. The caregiver role has traditionally included those activities that assist the client physically and psychologically while preserving the clients dignity. It is provides direct care and promotes comfort of client. Caregiving encompasses the physical, psychological, developmental, cultural and spiritual levels.

2. Communicator-

Communication is an integral to all nursing roles. Nurses communicate with the client, support persons, other health professionals, and people in the community. In the role of communicator, nurse identify client problems and then communicate these verbally. The quality of a quality of a nurse's communication is an important factor in nursing care.

3. Teacher- 

As a teacher, the nurse helps clients learn about their health and the health care procedures. Provides information and helps the client to learn or acquire new knowledge and technical skills. The nurse educate the client and their family regarding the disease condition, its treatment, prevention, restoration of health and maintains is health. They also may teach about the promotes of healthy lifestyle changes.

4. Advocate-

As an advocate acts the nurse to protect the client. In this role the nurse assists the clients to express their legal rights. Promotes what is best for the client ensuring that the client's needs are met and protecting the clients right.

5. Counselor-

Counselling is a process of helping a client to recognize and cope with stressful psychologic or social problems, to developed improved interpersonal relationships and to promote personal growth. It involves providing emotional, intellectual and psychologic support. Help the individual to develop new attitude, feelings and behaviours.

6. Change Agent-

The nurse acts as a change agent or assist clients to making behavioural modification in order to improve their health. Nurses also often act to make changes in a system such as clinical care, if it is not helping a client return to health.

7. Leader-

As a leader, the nurse helps the team members to work in cooperation. The nurse can act as a leader to individual client, family, colleagues, team members and community. Effective leadership is a learned process requiring an understanding of the needs and goals that motivate people.

8.  Manager-

The nurse manages the nursing core of individual, families and communities. The nurse as a manager delegates duties and responsibilities to other team members.

9.  Researcher -

As a researcher, the nurse participates in identifying significant researchable problems. The nurse have some awareness of the process and language of research, a sensitive to issues related to protecting the rights of human subjects. The participates in scientific investigation and must be a consumer of research findings.

10.  Rehabilitator-

Rehabilitation is the process of ensures that the client returns to maximal levels of functioning after illness, accidents or other disability.

12. Motivator

  • Motivation- Internal impulse that allows one to take action or change behaviors.
  • Nurses motivate patients to make changes by- having a positive attitude, listening to patient needs, encouraging, rewarding, and devoting time and energy to assist with changes.

13. Innovator

  • Takes action to make things happen
  • Initiates change
  • Sees a problem and looks for solutions. Instead of , “Oh well, there’s nothing that can be done about it” the innovator will be proactive.

Expanded Roles of the Nurses (Career Roles)- Expanded role of nurse means enlargement of nursing within the boundaries of nursing.

1.  Clinical specialists-

Is a nurse who has completed a advanced degree in speciality and has considerable clinical expertise in that speciality. She provides expert care to individuals, participates in educating health care professional and acts as a clinical consultant and participate in research.

2. Nurse Practitioner -

Is a nurse who has completed either as certificate programme or a advanced degree in a speciality and is also certified by the appropriate speciality organization. Various roles such as adult nurses, practitioner, family nurse practioner, school nurse practioner. Nurse practioner deals with acute illness, chronic illness and ambulatory care.

3.  Nurse Midwife-

Nurse midwife is a registered nurse who has completed a programme in midwife. The nurse provides prenatal and postnatal care and conducts normal delivery.

4. Nurse Anaesthetist-

A nurse who has an advanced education in an accredited programme in Anaesthesiology. The nurse assess the preoperative, postoperative assessment and administered general anaesthesia for surgery, under the supervision of anaethetist.

5. Nurse Educator-

A Nurse takes up the responsibility for clinical teaching, skills, educational setting and theoretical knowledge.

6. Nurse Administrator-

 A nurse who functions at various level of management in health setting. It is responsible for the management and administration of resources and personnel involved in giving patient care. They do staffing, planning and budgeting programmes.

7. Nurse Entrepreneur -

A nurse who has a advanced dgree and manages health related business.

8. Nurse Researcher -

A nurse have advanced education at level. The nurse researcher study of the nursing problems and solve problem based on the scientific study.

9. TRAVEL NURSING-

 Travel nursing and the travel nursing industry developed in response to the nursing shortage in which nurses are relocated for short term nursing positions.


10. NURSE ONCOLOGIST- Advance oncology nursing practice it means practice of expert and leadership in the provisional care to individual with an acute and potential diagnosis of cancer.


11. NURSE INFORMATICS/NURSE ANALYST -

  • The nursing analyst work within the management team to ensure high quality of performance and technical support to both the management and the nursing staff .
  • A nursing analyst must have a strong statistical background and be able to interpret data in a logical manner.
  • The nursing analyst must be able to work on multiple project at one time, focus on details. 

12. SPORT NURSE -

  • The nursing profession has yet to officially develop a specialty in fitness nursing or sport nursing on either the professional or academic level, a growing numbers of nurses become involved in these areas.

13. HOSPICE NURSE -

19. EPIDEMILOGY NURSE -

  • They identify population at risk monitor the progress of disease, specify areas of health care needs.
  • They don’t provide direct nursing care, but they do research and publish the latest trends in health care.

 20 ETHICIST-

  • A nurse who knows about legal/moral/ethical issues and provides services for patient and families is called nurse ethicist.
  • The nurse may work with an ethicist team to develop a detailed investigative plan .
  • The criteria is a master degrees in bioethics or related field along with a registered nurse certificate.
